Pillaton Gardening Club Summer Show
An increase in entries including the junior sections proved that this annual event is a good village get together and the committee would like to thank all supporters and visitors for making this such a worthwhile community effort.
Mrs Shelagh Skinnard kindly presented the trophies which run as follows:
Ian Edwards was outright winner in all things horticultural and received the Kernock Park Nurseries shield for his spade work. He also received the Kathryn Bunkum Cup for vegetables, the J Hubbard Cup for leeks and the Clare Druett Cup for fruit. His skills extend to the kitchen and he won the WI Rose Bowl for preserves.
Chris Barwell brought a wonderful selection of orchids and not surprisingly won the Horticultural Society Cup for pot plants.
The Rose Peter Cup for cut flowers and the W E Lucas Cup for herbs went to Linda Mavin.
The best potted shrub was Jan Simms' who received the Newton Ferrers Trophy.
The handicraft and needlecraft was staged in St Odulphs with the former being won by Noreen Symons (the Ken Beal Shield) and the latter, the Howarth Trophy being won by Esme Garland.
The art section was won by Alison Downing who received the Peter Hicks Plate.
The Gymkhana Association Cup for floral art was won by Nan Doughty.
Most points for cookery was won outright by Shirley Floyd who received the Davina Beal Cup.
A good example of what a good learning base these shows are is the Secretary's attempts over the years at a Dundee cake which have risen from unmarked to joint first … Shirley is a fount of all knowledge and everyone can gain by getting that all important tip to improve the end product.
Julie Bazley needs no tips having won the WI Silver Vase for the best jam sponge.
Yasmin Rundle acquitted herself well in the junior cookery winning the Rose Peter Shield for the most points.
Noreen Symons won the V N A Symons Wine Trophy, narrowly beating her son Spencer to the silverware.
Spencer did however win the Greta Jope Cup for colour photography and was emulated by his son Oliver who won junior photography, achieved most points in the junior section and won the Playgroup Cup for Garden on a Plate.
The Symons family of Spencer, Teresa, Oliver and Ivy amassed 110 points, thereby winning the J and T Dolley Trophy for the family gaining the most points in the show.

In keeping with other Gardening Clubs in the area, we have stopped charging for Show Entries which means there is no prize money. Prize cards are given to 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Highly Commended and all children receive medals for their contribution.
